Sustainable management of protected areas for future generations

Sustainable management of protected areas for future generations

This book consists of 28 papers selected from among those presented at the IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas 5th Conference on Protected Areas of East Asia, held on 21-25 June 2005 in Hong Kong. The title of the book repeats the theme of the Conference: “Sustainable Management of Protected Areas for Future Generations”. All the selected papers relate to the management of protected areas, but in other aspects they are very diverse. Almost half the papers come from the host city, Hong Kong, but the study areas of the others range from Hainan Island in the south to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea in the north. The focal ecosystems are equally diverse, from forested mountains to urban wetlands, and from streams to coral reefs. Some are concerned with the entire biotas of protected areas, while others focus on plants, birds, fish or invertebrates. Some report success stories, while others focus on threats, but most record both. This is the reality of conservation in densely populated East Asia, where most protected areas are too small and too popular to survive without
